Seeing the Unseen.
As we walk the auburn roads of our local village, and stumble over the deep crevices created by the evening rains. We wave to the friendly faces of our community and greet in a language that is foreign to my tongue. We are looking for the unseen in our travels.
We search for the ones that are forgotten, left alone and rejected; who find themselves on the outskirts or locked away for shame of their family’s reputation. For in this land I find myself that there is very little more shameful than having a child whose image does not fit the mould that society holds so closely. This mould, designed by community, puts barriers up in place for only those with an able body, a sound mind, and potential for the future are valued and appreciated.
But what if your body does not reflect this mould? What if your mind thinks in colour instead of word or sound? What if your legs forget how to walk or you feel uncomfortable in your own skin? What if you cannot hear the words of your parent’s instruction or cannot see the class work laid in front of you?
These are the ones we look for, not because they are less or more, not because they are helpless or perfect or pure, but because they are valued and loved by Our Father. “You are no less valuable in the eyes of the one who created you. For He created you perfectly, the way that you are.”
This is our message and our “Why” because everyone deserves to understand that those who are different are not wrong, useless, or frail. We aim to help the community to change their mould, to open up their minds, so that they can see the value of the precious gem inside.
